General & Laparoscopic Surgery

The term General Surgery describes a surgical specialty embracing a wide range of anatomy and systems of the body. According to the American College of Surgeons, the general surgeon is specially trained and experienced in diagnosis, surgery and pre-operative and post-operative care. General surgeons perform surgical procedures for both disease treatment and intervention required by trauma on:

· The head and neck

· Blood vessels

Also known as videoscopic surgery or endoscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery involves making a few small punctures in the abdomen to insert delicate surgical instruments and a video camera. The camera projects images from inside the patient's abdomen to a video monitor. Viewing the monitor, the surgeon manipulates the instruments to perform the operation.

Laparoscopic surgery offers a variety of benefits, including less post-operative pain, reduced risk of infection, shorter hospital stays and less potential for scarring. Generally speaking, laparoscopic surgery is less disruptive to the organs, muscles and nerves than traditional surgery. The patient can usually return to work and resume normal activities in a very short time.
