Mitchel S. Carter, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Carter is a board-certified general surgeon at Allied Surgical Group, Morristown, NJ, and an attending physician at Morristown Memorial Hospital.
He graduated from the Chicago Medical School, where he was valedictorian, in 1979. During medical school, he was selected for membership to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He also received the Scholastic Achievement Award from the Alumni Association at the Chicago Medical School.
Dr. Carter became a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery in 1985. He was recertified in 1994 and 2003. He became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1988.
He did his surgical internship at Montefiore Hospital and Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1979-1980. He completed his surgical residency at Montefiore Hospital and Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1980-1984.
During his residency, Dr. Carter received several awards, including the Leo M. Davidoff Award for excellence in teaching medical students and fellow residents in both 1982 and 1983. He also received the Outstanding House Officer Award during his chief residency year.
Dr. Carter has been a speaker at national meetings of groups such as the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Gastroenterology and the American Society of Geriatric Medicine. He has also been published in the prestigious American Journal of Surgery.
In 1989 Dr. Carter trained under Dr. Reddick, who was the first doctor in the U.S. to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy – the “belly button” gall bladder procedure.
In 1989, Dr. Carter performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was instrumental in starting the laparoscopic program at Morristown Memorial Hospital, which performs more laparoscopic procedures than any other hospital in New Jersey.
Dr. Carter has performed several thousand laparoscopic procedures, including removal of gall bladders, appendixes, colon tumors, pancreatic tumors and adrenal tumors. He has also performed numerous laparoscopic fundoplications for gastroesophageal reflux, laparoscopic splenectomies for hematologic disorders, laparoscopic colectomies for diverticulitis and cancer, and both laparoscopic and open hernia repairs.
Dr. Carter has been a supervisor of other surgeons for laparoscopic procedures and has taught laparoscopic courses at the University of Buffalo and for Ethicon, Inc., one of the largest companies involved in the manufacturing of laparoscopic equipment.
During his career in general surgery, Dr. Carter has taken great pride in his ability to teach the surgical residents at Morristown Memorial Hospital. In 1999 the surgical residents nominated him for the John Alkhas Memorial Award, given to the attending surgeon who best exemplifies the patience, compassionate care, surgical skills and commitment to teach the surgical residents.
Dr. Carter has been named a “Top Doctor” by New Jersey Monthly magazine in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Dr. Carter takes great pride in achieving excellent results and assuring that his patients receive the best possible care. Each patient and each situation is unique. Whenever possible, he advocates including the patient in his or her own course of treatment. Preoperative and postoperative care often take a great deal of time and effort and that is something that Dr. Carter emphasizes.
